Story Number THIRTEEN

Invest One Year to learn the Taxi Cab Business

When I first retired to Santa Barbara California ( age 40 - 1980  ) from the "no cash" real estate business
I enjoyed the leisure and fun of seeing the sights.

After about 3 or 4 months of taking it easy and enjoying myself I decided to go into business.
The business I chose was the taxi cab business or more general TRANSPORTATION.

I chose the taxi cab business because of the many times I flew in and out of the Santa Barbara Airport I noticed
that there was no taxi-service sitting at the airport to immediately take passengers from the airport to their home.

The accepted way of travel ( yet the most aggravating ) was to have your plane land,
immediately call a cab ( which took anywhere up to an hour to arrive - Santa Barbara Airport is in Goleta Ca. ),
retrieve your baggage and sit outside the airport waiting for the taxi. The reason this happened is because the
only cab company in Santa Barbara, at that time, was Yellow Cab and they didn't sit at the airport.

IDEA!

Start a cab company that catered to the passengers arriving at the airport.
I decided to spend time at LAX ( Los Angeles International Airport ) to train myself well enough to
be able to run a taxi cab company, exclusive to the Santa Barbara Airport and make some great money.

Whenever you get involved in a new project you must do research.

I  spent 10 months at LAX driving for four different cab companies ( changing companies every 2.5 months )
to get complete exposure as to what it was like to drive at this international airport.

I got so involved in my research that I would drive to Los Angeles, pickup my taxi, drive to the airport and
get into the holding lot that sat just outside the airport. There were usually 75 to 150 taxi's waiting to be called
down to the main terminals.

I was very serious and worked for a period of 23 days straight ( on average ) from 6am to 1am the next morning,
averaging about $125.00 per day. The amount of days was my choice and varied from month to month based on
my excitement and what was going on with my family back in Santa Barbara.

Do you know what it takes to be successful?

I started at 6am because there were no taxi's in the holding lot and I was able to drive right into the airport
terminals to take my first ride. After a few times I actually drove till 1am and at that time I would park in
the first position on terminal seven ( United Airlines ), lock the doors, jump in the back seat and go to sleep
until 6am when a passenger from Hawaii ( the first United flight in ) knocked on the window, for a ride.

Doing this for 23 days straight was a challenge.

In those 23 days I made an average of $3,000 and took the rest of the month off. The important thing here
is that I was learning every day and making notes as to how I was going to apply what I was learning.

I did this for ten months. Four different companies and all I did during that time was work the airport.
At the end of the 10 months I bought my first taxi. I bought it from a driver who worked for a company in
Van Nuys, California and the taxi was fully equipped. I paid $500 cash for the vehicle. It was red and white
with Valley Cab of Van Nuys on the doors.

The reason I bought this taxi was because I knew ( due to my research ) that yellow cab in Santa Barbara
had another company they had bought out called "Valley Cab" and yes the colors were red and white with
black letters. So all I had to do is take off the "of Van Nuys" and I had a valley cab that I could
contract with to drive at the Santa Barbara Airport.

Returning to Santa Barbara I negotiated with the owner of yellow cab and registered my valley cab
and started driving. Sitting right outside the airport was ideal. When people came out I would take
2, 3, or 4 different loads in order to accommodate the passengers. I made a fortune.

After 15 days ( the amount of time to register my own company ) I started

SANTA BARBARA AIRPORT TAXI

I painted the vehicle a different color, made up custom stickers for the doors and went out to the airport
to be able to make the entire profits coming from the business. At the time that I decided to get out of this business
( 13 years later ) I had accumulated 12 taxi's ( exclusive to the airport ) with 22 drivers ( full & part-time )
and made a bundle of money. If you are every at the Santa Barbara Airport look for Santa Barbara
Airport Taxi - I believe it still exists under a different owner.

SPECIAL NOTE: Find a niche' and fill it. Provide a needed service. Do your research. Create the IDEA of
making a contribution to the community and you will prosper. The 10 year period, from 1980 to 1990,
I fully concentrated on the transportation business. Ending up with eight different, yet complimentary
companies, I was able to become a millionaire in just over 7 years, and then I sold the companies.
