Story Number FOURTEEN – Santa Barbara Limousine

After registering my airport taxi service in November 1982 I decided that I wanted to enhance my transportation
services by adding a limousine service. I searched for the local limousine services of which there were two and
believe it or not, there was no Santa Barbara Limousine.

So in December 1982 I registered the name Santa Barbara Limousine and now all I had to do is find a limousine.
My wife, at that time, worked for a restaurant called Harry's Plaza Cafe and she knew plenty of people.
I talked to her one night and she suggested I talk to a certain gentleman who had indicated he
had a limousine which he wanted to sell.

One thing about being able to buy 3.2 million dollars worth of real estate with "no cash" I wasn't really
interested in putting out any of my money to buy anything. One of the most important things about becoming
a millionaire is that you realize - you not only make more money, you also must decrease your expenses to zero.

My wife got his phone number and I called him for a meeting. I explain what I was doing and convinced
him to give me his limousine with nothing down ( imagine that! ) and I made his monthly payments.

I want you to know that there are people everywhere that, at a certain point, they get tired of
what they have and they want to get rid of it. So here I was with my first limousine. It was a silver stretch,
in great shape and the only draw back was it had a diesel engine. For the price I got it for
I was willing to deal with it.

As I was registering my new company and making arrangements to pickup my limousine I was also
planning my promotional strategy for my introduction into the limousine market.

Tradition, in the limousine business, is to have a 3 hour minimum. So, when you went to dinner
the limousine picks you up at 6pm and drops you at the restaurant at 6:30pm. The driver parks
the limousine and waits outside for you to have dinner ( 6 people take 2 hours to eat dinner ).

You leave the restaurant at 8:30pm, get back in the limousine and it takes you home by 9:00pm.
This is your three hour minimum and you also must tip the driver at least 15% of the total cost.

Now, my competitors charged $50 per hour. The total cost for this service was $150.00
plus 15% ( $22.50 ) or a total cost of $172.50.

Considering this, I promoted my limousine business with the motto

"NO LONGER DO YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR YOUR LIMOUSINE,
WHILE YOU ARE NOT USING IT!"

I did this by having a ONE HOUR MINIMUM.

So, we picked you up at 6pm - dropped you at the restaurant at 7pm. You tell us that you wanted
us back there at 9pm ( after 2 hour dinner ) and we came back at that time. We then drove you
around town for one hour and dropped you off at home.

We charged $62.50 per hour ( $12.50 more per hour than our competitors ).

At the end of the night your total cost was 2 hours ( 6 to 7pm and 9 to 10pm ) or $100.00
plus 15% to the driver or a total cost of $115.00.

YOUR TOTAL SAVINGS WAS $57.50
( the difference between $172.50 and $115.00 for the same identical service )

Let me ask you a question.

"What limousine service would you hire?"

I think I know your answer and many other people agreed. To this day no one in Santa Barbara
operating a limousine service is offering a one hour minimum, and I made tons of money.

Imagine that?

With the establishment of the one hour minimum we were able to capture the dinner market, the prom
market and we also concentrated on the DIVORCE MARKET ( we supplied the black and blue balloons ).

Over the 13 years of transportation service in Santa Barbara, at the peak of my business,
I had on the road as many as 106 limousines and I didn't own any of them.
Ask me how I did this, when you call?

SPECIAL NOTE: In the business world there are competitors. People that want the money that is
spent in a particular business, like the limousine business. When you want to earn maximum money you
need to offer something different from everyone else, otherwise, you are just like everyone else
out there. Every business I've ever operated I have been able to figure out an approach that
made me tons of money.

With my transportation business, in the 80's, I became a millionaire in business in just under 7 years.
