OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Story Number FIVE – USMC ( United States Marine Corps )

In June 1966 I had run out of deferment regarding my draft status and the army was hot on my heels.
I had reached the age of 27 and didn't have any more time to stay out of the draft by continuing in college.
Instead of letting the army draft me I decided to join the Marine Corps.

I went to the nearest Marine Corps Recruiter and told him that I would sign up today as long as he
guaranteed to send me to California. He checked with his commander
and came back to have me sign the papers.

In October 1966 I was on a plane with others heading toward San Diego Boot Camp for
eight weeks of hell. When I checked in I weighed 234lbs.

The Marine Corps. had three different categories for recruits:
01) Fat boys, 02) Those that weighed what they were supposed to and 03) Skinny boys.

Category one got HALF RATIONS. Category two got regular meals and Category three had to
eat DOUBLE RATIONS. One of the reasons that I went into the Marine Corps. was to
lose weight, so I cut my half rations in half and lost 50lbs in 8 weeks.

Because of my age ( 27yrs ) and my college background ( 3yrs ) I was appointed "secretary"
of the platoon and made private first-class before leaving boot camp.

During my two year tour I was stationed at my second place of encampment Camp Pendleton California
where I served out the total two years of my active enlistment.

I was in a Combat Intelligence Section ( S-2 ) which performed security clearances and I also
typed SOP's ( Standard Operating Procedures ) for different areas of operation.

Due to my certification as a scuba diver and my experience as a trainer I was assigned to the
San Mateo Pool where I designed a course entitled "Water Safety and Survival-Vietnam" because we
were losing more battalion and regimental scouts by drowning, than by actual combat.

I spent the entire two years training at the pool, along with teaching "Enemy Interrogation Methods" and other
courses of instruction. Due to my experience in these different fields I was able to be useful here in the states
and never went to Vietnam, even though I had four separate sets of orders to go... I achieved the rank of
sergeant in 17 months. Honorably discharged in November 1968 from active duty and in 1972 from my
six year tour ( 2 years active and 4 years inactive ).
